Hyundai to buy SoftBank’s remaining Boston Dynamics stake
South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group plans to buy SoftBank Group’s remaining 9.65% stake in Boston Dynamics for US$325 million. The deal would make Boston Dynamics a wholly owned Hyundai subsidiary.
The move would follow Hyundai Motor Group’s 2021 purchase of a controlling stake in a deal valued at US$1.1 billion. At closing, Hyundai Motor Group held 80%, and SoftBank retained 20%.
SoftBank’s put option was tied to whether Hyundai pursued a US initial public offering of Boston Dynamics by June 2025 under the original agreement.
Boston Dynamics’ robots are already on the market. Spot is used for industrial inspections, while Stretch has been deployed with logistics and retail customers.
Hyundai said it already uses Spot for inspection and predictive maintenance at its facilities, while Stretch secured a US$15 million DHL Supply Chain pre-order in 2022.
