Hyundai teams up with Google, Nvidia on AI humanoid robots

Hyundai Motor Group unveiled its AI robotics strategy at CES 2026, detailing plans to deploy robots in manufacturing and industrial settings over the next several years.

The South Korea-based automaker will work with Boston Dynamics with Google DeepMind’s cutting-edge robot AI foundation models, driving the development of breakthrough technologies.

Boston Dynamics known for its industrial robots like Spot and Stretch, to expand the use of collaborative robotics for tasks such as data collection, safety monitoring, and warehouse automation.

At CES, Hyundai introduced the Atlas humanoid robot, designed for industrial applications and featuring advanced movement capabilities and AI-driven learning.

Atlas will be gradually introduced to factory processes starting in 2028, with broader deployment planned by 2030 as its safety and performance are validated.

Hyundai is also opening a Robot Metaplant Application Center in the US in 2026 to train robots for industrial collaboration and plans to leverage its strategic partnership with Nvidia to advance AI development.

The company will showcase these robotics technologies and related products at its CES 2026 booth in Las Vegas.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Hyundai’s 2028–2030 Atlas rollout faces scale-up gaps despite production start

  • Boston Dynamics started Atlas production in Boston, with all 2026 units going to Hyundai’s Robot Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) and Google DeepMind 1, though the path to tens of thousands of robots is unclear. Hyundai’s $26 billion U.S. program includes a robotics plant sized for 30,000 units per year 1. It has not shared extra pilots, pricing, or return on investment (ROI) targets 1.
  • Atlas begins with parts sequencing (staging components in the right order for assembly) in 2028 then moves to component assembly by 2030 2. The short gap from 2026 builds to broad use pressures training data, safety checks, and supply chain setup.
  • A Hyundai Mobis pact to supply actuators (motorized components that move robot joints) tackles one constraint 1. Scaling to autonomous battery-swapping robots that run in -4°F to 104°F conditions 1 needs long field trials that may not fit a two-year window.

Third-party safety certification providers can capture demand from humanoid factory adoption

  • New ISO 10218-1 and -2:2025 rules for industrial robot safety add collaborative application needs plus coverage for mobile platforms, functional safety, cybersecurity 3. Builders and plant teams must clear more compliance steps before use.
  • UL Solutions opened a commercial and service robot testing lab in South Korea 4. OSHA added UL 3300 (a safety standard for commercial robotic systems) to the Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) Program’s List of Appropriate Test Standards 5. Labs can serve rising Asia-Pacific demand as professional service robot sales grew 30% 4.
  • Systems integrators with insurers can package work around UL 3300 for human-robot interaction safety 4 and ISO 10218 for factory tasks 3. They can add ISO 13482 (a safety standard for personal care robots) 5 as Hyundai’s “human-centered automation” 2 spreads fenceless collaborative floors. TÜV Rheinland’s committee roles 6 and labs that run pre-certification testing (early assessments before formal certification) plus regulatory navigation 7 can speed launches by 2028.
