Hyundai pushes AI automation at US auto plants

Hyundai Motor said this week it will build a system to make 30,000 Atlas humanoid robots from its US unit Boston Dynamics a year by 2028.

The company also plans to deploy more than 25,000 at Hyundai and Kia plants in the US as part of its AI and factory automation plans.

Atlas robots will first be used at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia in 2028 and then at Kia’s nearby plant in 2029, said Kia CEO Song Ho-sung.

Hyundai also plans to open a robot training center at the Georgia site this summer using a reasoning AI system developed with Google DeepMind.

The robots are initially assigned to physically demanding factory work.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Atlas moves from lab work to factory jobs through clear technical and business choices

  • Hyundai can push Atlas into factory work because the new robot can lift up to 50 kg (110 lbs) and reach 2.3 meters (7.5 ft) 1.
  • For longer shifts, Atlas can drive itself to a station, replace its own batteries, then head straight back to work 1.
  • Boston Dynamics plans to add Google DeepMind’s AI models to Atlas for stronger reasoning. Those skills can spread across robot groups through Boston Dynamics’ Orbit software, a tool for managing and monitoring robot fleets 1.
  • Hyundai’s 2021 deal to buy Boston Dynamics valued the company at US$1.1 billion, and the robot maker has lost millions of dollars each year for several years 2.

Factory use puts safety and liability under pressure

  • Hyundai’s rollout will pressure an industrial robot safety system that already includes safety executives at Boston Dynamics and specialists writing standards for these machines 3.
  • Autonomous mobile robots, meaning robots that can move around a workplace on their own, will start shaping legal precedent in spaces shared with people. Injuries and deaths have already happened with less advanced industrial robots 4.
  • Factory use also opens the door to robots in homes. That shift faces a governance gap because consumer protection and privacy laws do not cover machines that learn while collecting data over time 5.
