Hyundai Motor and its affiliates are moving to acquire SoftBank’s remaining 9.9% stake in Boston Dynamics, a US robotics company, for about US$325 million after SoftBank exercised a put option from the original deal.

The move would give the Seoul-based automaker full ownership of Boston Dynamics.

The transaction values Boston Dynamics at about US$3.3 billion, in line with the baseline set when Hyundai first bought a controlling stake in 2021.

Hyundai is preparing to deploy Atlas humanoid robots on production lines at its Georgia Metaplant from 2028 and is continuing development work with Nvidia and Google DeepMind.

The buyout also comes as Boston Dynamics has long struggled to commercialize its products and achieve profitability, despite rising investor interest in humanoid robotics and physical AI.

Elsewhere in the sector, Agility Robotics, a US humanoid robot maker, says its Digit humanoid is already deployed commercially.

Meanwhile, US regulators say general workplace rules still apply to robot systems, and factory rollouts require documented risk assessments.
