Hyundai Motor Group said at its San Francisco AI Summit it plans to expand beyond carmaking into physical AI, including autonomous driving, robotics, and AI factories.

Chairman Chung Eui-sun said Hyundai would first improve the intelligence of vehicles and robots, then production spaces such as AI factories, before connecting those systems at the city infrastructure level.

Nvidia defines physical AI as systems that can perceive, understand, reason and act in the physical world.

Its autonomous driving push builds on a 2024 partnership with Waymo to integrate the Waymo Driver into Hyundai Ioniq 5 sport utility vehicles for the Waymo One fleet.

Hyundai also said Boston Dynamics, a US robotics company owned by Hyundai, and Google DeepMind are working to enable Atlas humanoid robots to perform industrial tasks.

The company said it plans annual US robot production capacity of 30,000 units by 2028.

It also outlined about 9 trillion Korean won for the Saemangeum AI Valley project and 42 trillion Korean won in Yeongnam over 10 years, with the latter tied in part to manufacturing AI and other advanced industries.
