Hyundai, Kia partner with Korean battery makers on EV safety

Hyundai Motor and Kia have signed a memorandum of understanding with LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On to develop new EV safety technologies.

The agreement was announced at Hyundai and Kia’s R&D center in Hwaseong, South Korea, after a year of joint work focused on EV battery safety.

This collaboration follows a major EV battery fire incident in 2024 that raised safety concerns in the country.

The companies plan to continue joint research, share patent rights, and create new safety technologies aimed at setting standards for the industry.

Five priority projects have been identified, including work on safety patents, digital battery passports, design and manufacturing quality, and firefighting technology.

The ceremony was attended by executives from the automakers, battery firms, and officials from South Korea’s transport and industry ministries.

The timing of this Korean collaboration aligns with global regulatory tightening that makes safety compliance increasingly expensive to achieve alone.

China’s new GB38031-2025 regulation, effective July 2026, requires battery systems to withstand thermal runaway events for at least two hours without causing fire or explosion—a significant upgrade from previous standards that only required early warning systems3.
