Hyundai, Kia expand Nvidia partnership for self-driving tech

Hyundai Motor Co. and affiliate Kia Corp. said they will adopt Nvidia Corp.’s autonomous-driving technologies in select models and expand their partnership to jointly develop next-generation systems by integrating the automakers’ software-defined vehicle capabilities with Nvidia’s Level 2+ features.

The group said it will leverage Nvidia Corp.’s data platforms and AI technologies and will integrate data into a unified learning pipeline.

The group’s US-based autonomous-vehicle joint venture, Motional, will also work with Nvidia Corp. to further advance Motional’s Level 4 robotaxi capabilities.

The group said it plans to establish an integrated self-driving architecture scalable from Level 2 to Level 4 on Nvidia Corp.’s Drive Hyperion platform.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Hyundai’s Nvidia bet goes beyond autonomous cars

  • The partnership builds on work that started in 2015. Hyundai Motor Group said it would roll out the NVIDIA DRIVE “connected car” infotainment platform across all new Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models from 2022 onward 1.
  • The scope now covers factory and robotics work. Hyundai Motor Group plans to use Nvidia’s Omniverse platform (a 3D simulation tool for building “digital twin” replicas of real-world environments) to create factory digital twins, plus the Isaac robot development platform (a software toolkit for building robots) to build and deploy AI robots 2.
  • The plan is backed by an investment announced in late 2025. Hyundai Motor Group and NVIDIA said they will build an AI factory powered by NVIDIA Blackwell AI infrastructure (Nvidia’s data-center hardware and software stack for training AI), with integrated model training, validation, and deployment using 50,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs. The companies tied this to an approximately $3 billion investment to advance the physical AI landscape in Korea 3.
  • This work lines up with Hyundai Motor Group’s 2022 target to shift its lineup to software-defined vehicles (SDVs), cars whose features and performance are increasingly controlled and upgraded through software, by 2025 under “Unlock the Software Age” 4.

The deal hints at a winner-take-most platform fight in automotive tech

  • Automakers are buying full development stacks, not only processors.
  • Nvidia sells a “cloud-to-car” platform that links in-vehicle compute, simulation tools, and data center infrastructure for AI training. It includes NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor, an in-car computer designed to run advanced driver-assistance and autonomous-driving software 3.
  • That approach differs from Qualcomm, which leans on integrated connectivity in its automotive platforms 5. It also contrasts with Mobileye, which sells a more proprietary, vertically integrated system 6.
  • Hyundai Motor Group wants one data pipeline across its fleet. The aim is to use real-world driving data to keep training AI and ship changes through over-the-air updates (software updates delivered wirelessly to vehicles) 7.
