• The latest software recall adds to a steady record of recalls for both automakers.
• In January 2025, Hyundai and Kia recalled 343,250 vehicles for several issues 1. The total included imported models recalled by Mercedes-Benz Korea and Tesla Korea. One problem involved a 12V (12-volt) battery sensor design error on the Porter II Electric and the Bongo III EV 1.
• In the U.S., more than 145,000 Hyundai and Genesis electric vehicles were recalled over a charging control unit flaw that could cause a sudden loss of power while driving 2.
• In March 2024, about 69,000 vehicles were recalled over manufacturing defects, including poor durability in engine oil supply pipes 3.

Automotive recalls increasingly tie to software, not only hardware

• Hyundai and Kia recalled 179,880 vehicles over software defects 4. The issues included reduced braking performance in the Hyundai Porter II Electric, Kia Bongo III EV, and other Kia models. Another defect involved instrument-cluster software in Hyundai models that include Grandeur and Sonata 4.
• A single bug can spread across hundreds of thousands of vehicles quickly, which can affect safety systems such as braking.
• Other automakers face similar problems. Stellantis, the parent company of brands including Jeep, Ram, and Peugeot, and Tesla have also recalled vehicles for software errors in systems that include coolant heaters and tire pressure monitoring 31.
• Software now runs most vehicle functions. That expands the failure surface and raises the risk of costly safety problems.
