Hyundai expands robot push with Boston Dynamics Atlas

Hyundai Motor Group has set up software-defined factory, or SDF, robotics procurement, and global trade strategy units as it prepares to deploy Boston Dynamics’ Atlas humanoid robots.

The rollout will cover Hyundai Motor and Kia plants.

Hyundai named Alpeeshi Patel as SDF promotion as the model was tested at Hyundai’s Singapore innovation center using AI, robotics, and digiital twin technologies.

An SDF uses one software system to manage production, quality control, and logistics.

Boston Dynamic said Atlas is built for material handling and sequencing.

Hyundai is its first pilot customer for real-world sequencing.  The company plans to use Atlas for parts sorting at its Georgia plant from 2028.

The annual target of 30,000 robots matches Boston Dynamics’ statement that Hyundai plans a new US robotics factory with that capacity and aims to deploy more than 25,000 robots internally.

Hyundai also set up a Robotics Components Procurement Division and a Global Trade Strategy Office as tariff pressure from the US rises.

Hyundai Motor and Kia reportedly incurred 7.2 trillion won (US$4.75 billion) in tariff-related costs last year, while the US now imposes 25% tariffs on imported vehicles and some parts.
