Hyundai bets $6.9b on AI, hydrogen, robotics hub in S. Korea

Hyundai Motor Group plans to invest 10 trillion won (US$6,92 billion) over five years in the Saemangeum area of Jeollabuk-do, focusing on AI, hydrogen, and robotics, according to a company statement.

The company aims to sign a memorandum of understanding with relevant government ministries, including trade and energy agencies, to support the project.

The investment includes building an AI data center, water electrolysis facilities for green hydrogen, and a robot manufacturing plant. Saemangeum was chosen due to its large land area and abundant sunlight, which can support renewable energy generation.

The project is expected to bolster local employment and economic activity.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Hyundai’s Saemangeum site draws on incentives, land, and power

  • Saemangeum offers more than space and renewable energy, since it includes the Saemangeum National Industrial Complex plus investment incentives.
  • Firms can lease land for up to 100 years at 1% of the official value per year, with an example rent of 5,000 won per m² 1.
  • Employment support adds another draw. Hiring more than 20 full-time employees can bring a monthly subsidy of 1.5 million won per person for up to six months 2.
  • The Saemangeum Development and Investment Agency website says the complex secured 6.6 trillion won in investment in about a year since the current administration took office, which is over four times the total from the prior nine years 1.

The data center ties to Hyundai’s AI plans and global competition

  • The planned AI data center fits Hyundai’s wider AI infrastructure effort, and it lines up with Hyundai Motor Group’s separate collaboration with NVIDIA on a Blackwell-powered “AI factory” using 50,000 Blackwell GPUs 3.
  • This buildout supports Hyundai’s attempt to narrow the gap with rivals such as Tesla in autonomous driving, an area where Hyundai has faced setbacks 4.
  • The AI work also feeds robotics and smart factories. That includes digital-twin simulation (virtual replicas of physical factories used to test changes before deploying them) plus rollout in manufacturing facilities 3.
  • Hyundai’s spending sits within South Korea’s broader AI infrastructure drive. Samsung and SK Group are also planning large-scale AI factories, and the country aims to deploy over a quarter-million NVIDIA GPUs across sovereign clouds (government-controlled cloud computing environments) and AI factories 5.
