Hyundai, Audi, BYD race to capture South Korea’s EV sedan market

Hyundai, Audi, and BYD are increasing their push for electric sedans in South Korea to balance sales between sedans and SUVs.

Hyundai recently launched a redesigned IONIQ 6 EV in Korea, three years after its initial debut in 2022.

The IONIQ 6 can travel up to 562 kilometers on a single charge and is priced below 50 million won (US$35,800).

Audi Korea has introduced the A6 e-tron electric sedan, which offers a range of 469 kilometers and accelerates to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.4 seconds.

Audi Korea sold 4,910 vehicles in the first half of 2025, up 36.3% year-on-year, driven by sales of the electric Q4 SUV.

BYD, a Chinese automaker, has started delivering its Seal electric sedan in Korea, after the earlier launch of the Atto 3 compact electric SUV.

The BYD Seal is available for around 40 million won (US$28,700) after subsidies and can accelerate to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.8 seconds.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Korean automakers completed dramatic transformation from EV resistance to competition

Seven years ago, Hyundai’s union leadership called electric vehicles “evil” and predicted they would destroy up to 70% of jobs due to their simpler design eliminating complex engine components2.

Today, Hyundai is launching its flagship IONIQ 6 sedan with Korea’s longest range at 562 kilometers, directly competing against premium imports at under $35,7001.

This transformation reflects how Korean automakers shifted from viewing EVs as an existential threat to embracing them as a competitive advantage.

The union’s 2018 concerns about job losses and declining sedan sales in key markets have been replaced by strategic EV launches targeting specific market segments2.

2️⃣ Sedan focus represents strategic differentiation in maturing EV market

While most EV growth globally has centered on SUVs, these three automakers are betting on sedans to capture Korean consumers who prioritize range and value.
