Hybrid surge balances EV slowdown in Korea’s auto market
Hyundai Motor Group and Renault Korea are expanding their hybrid SUV offerings in South Korea, responding to changing consumer demand and slowing EV sales.
Hyundai launched the all-new Palisade, its first major update in six years, with a hybrid option that made up over 70% of launch orders in January.
The Palisade Hybrid, priced between 49.7 million and 63.3 million won (US$35.4 million–$45.1 million), offers a fuel efficiency of 14.1 km/l and a maximum output of 334 horsepower.
From January to August, Palisade sales reached 42,268 units.
Renault Korea’s Grand Koleos Hybrid, launched in September 2024, accounted for 80.82% of Renault’s 35,933 domestic sales as of August.
The Grand Koleos Hybrid features a dual-motor system and fuel efficiency of up to 15.8 km/l, with prices from 37.8 million to 43.5 million won.
KGM’s Musso EV, South Korea’s first electric pickup, sold over 6,000 units by mid-September and is priced from 48 million won before tax incentives.
General Motors Korea has postponed its Equinox EV launch, with no new models released this year.
