Huawei’s Mate 80 phones arrive with upgraded Kirin chips

Huawei has launched its Mate 80 series smartphones, with advanced models powered by the new Kirin 9030 processor, during an event on November 25 in Shenzhen.

The Kirin 9030 chip is used in the 12GB RAM Mate 80 Pro, while the Kirin 9030 Pro version is built into the 16GB RAM Mate 80 Pro, Mate 80 Pro Max, and Mate 80 RS.

The entry-level Mate 80 uses the older Kirin 9020 chip.

Huawei’s chairman of the consumer business group, Richard Yu, said the Mate 80 Pro and Pro Max models with the Kirin 9030 Pro deliver up to 42% better performance than last year’s Mate 70 Pro+, while the 12GB Mate 80 Pro with Kirin 9030 reportedly offers a 35% improvement over the Mate 70 Pro.

The company did not share technical details about the Kirin 9030.

Huawei also unveiled the Mate X7 foldable phone, with prices for the Mate 80 series starting at 4,699 yuan (US$660).

Huawei withheld the Kirin 9030 process node and foundry, likely Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC), China’s largest contract chipmaker. Without those details, it is hard to tell if this is a leap or a tune-up of old nodes 1.
A 42 percent gain can come from design tweaks, not new manufacturing. Kunpeng 930, an Arm-based data center CPU, still uses a five-year-old 5-nanometer process, so Huawei may be stuck on mature nodes (older manufacturing processes) 2.
