Huawei unveils 7.2 Tbps optics module for AI

Huawei Technologies, a Shenzhen-based telecoms and technology company, unveiled what it said was the industry’s first 7.2-terabit-per-second near-packaged optics module at the China International Optoelectronic Exposition in Shenzhen.

Huawei said the product was designed to ease AI infrastructure bottlenecks by using optical signals instead of copper links.

Huawei said the module delivers 7.2Tbps across 36 channels, each running at 200 gigabits per second.

The company said placing optical components closer to network switching chips reduces signal loss and power consumption.

Huawei said the product had entered development ahead of possible volume production once the supply chain and manufacturing system are in place.

It added that the module joins a newer group of high-density optical interconnect products for AI systems, alongside Broadcom’s 6.4Tbps optical engines for co-packaged optics.
