Huawei tops China’s smartphone market for first time in four years
Huawei Technologies has become the leading smartphone brand in China for the first time in over four years, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).
The company captured 18% of the market in the second quarter of 2025, surpassing competitors Vivo and Oppo, which experienced declines.
The Shenzhen-based company demonstrated resilience in a declining market.
Overall smartphone shipments in China fell 4% year-on-year to 69 million units.
This marks a turnaround for Huawei, which faced years of US export restrictions that limited access to critical technologies. In response to these restrictions, Huawei developed its own hardware and software.
In 2024, it launched new devices featuring domestically produced semiconductors. It also introduced smartphones with its own operating system, moving away from Google’s Android.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Huawei’s comeback demonstrates how trade restrictions can accelerate domestic innovation
Huawei’s return to the top spot in China’s smartphone market represents a remarkable reversal after years of struggling with US export restrictions that began in 2019.
When blacklisted by the US government, Huawei lost access to critical components from American chipmakers and Google’s Android services, threatening its smartphone business 1.
Rather than surrendering market position, Huawei accelerated its self-sufficiency strategy, developing proprietary technologies including its HarmonyOS operating system and domestic semiconductor capabilities 2.
This technological independence has now translated into commercial success, with Huawei shipping 12.5 million phones in Q2 2025 and capturing 18.1% market share, demonstrating how trade barriers can sometimes stimulate rather than eliminate competition 3.
Huawei’s recovery also highlights the effectiveness of its dual-focus strategy: developing premium devices with innovative features like dual-fold displays while simultaneously strengthening its supply chain resilience.
2️⃣ China’s smartphone market enters maturity phase with implications for global vendors
The 4% decline in China’s smartphone market in Q2 2025 signals a shift toward market maturity after six consecutive quarters of growth, indicating changing dynamics in the world’s largest smartphone market 3.
