Huawei hopes to launch its new AI chip in Korea to rival Nvidia
Huawei plans to introduce its new AI chip, the Ascend 950, in Korea in 2026 as part of efforts to expand in the country’s AI infrastructure sector.
The company will offer the chip in cluster configurations, along with AI computing cards and data center solutions, positioning its offerings as an alternative to Nvidia.
Huawei aims to deliver end-to-end solutions, integrating hardware and software, and plans to directly manage integration and service without relying on partners.
Huawei is reportedly in talks with potential customers over possible supply arrangements.
Separately, Huawei Korea will make HarmonyOS available to Korean businesses next year for smart home devices, but the company has no plans to launch smartphones in Korea in 2026.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Huawei’s Korean expansion faces legal uncertainty under U.S. export-control guidance
- BusinessKorea says the U.S. Department of Commerce now treats use of Huawei Ascend AI chips anywhere as a breach of U.S. export rules, while Huawei targets Ascend 950 clusters in Korea by 2026 1.
- Enterprises in Korea and cloud or systems integrators face legal risk because South Korea has close defense and tech ties with the U.S., which could jeopardize access to U.S. technology if they buy Huawei AI gear.
- The 2026 schedule depends on Korean trade plus export-control regulators allowing such deals despite U.S. pressure, which could test Seoul’s balance between commerce with China and security ties with Washington.
- A no-partner model for end-to-end stacks 2 could raise compliance risk, since intermediaries that steer regulatory work or add legal distance from sanctioned entities would be missing.
Korean machine learning operations (MLOps) providers could bridge the Ascend adoption gap
- If Korean enterprises adopt Ascend hardware, DevOps and MLOps firms can build migration tools for PyTorch, an open-source deep learning framework. These tools would target Ascend 950 through Huawei’s Compute Architecture for Neural Networks (CANN) toolkit and torch_npu, Huawei’s PyTorch adapter for neural processing units, with support for MindSpore projects 345.
- Huawei open-sourced torch_npu and is gradually opening CANN 34. That gives independent software vendors a base to ship compatibility layers without a direct Huawei tie, which may ease compliance worries.
- UnifiedBus is Huawei’s interconnect for linking compute, memory, and networking across Ascend systems 64. Teams may need training or consulting or managed services to build internal skills.
- Vendors that mask hardware gaps can keep models portable across Nvidia plus Ascend setups, which lets enterprises hedge against geopolitical supply chain risk.
