Huawei revenue rose 2.2% as cloud weakness offsets gains

Huawei 2025 revenue rose 2.2% year-on-year to 880.9 billion yuan (US$127.5 billion), as modest gains in its main units offset a drop in cloud.

Consumer revenue rose 1.6% to 344.5 billion yuan (US$49.96 billion), while its information and communications technology infrastructure unit grew 2.6% to 375 billion yuan (US$54.39 billion).

Cloud revenue fell 3.5%, while its intelligent automotive solutions unit reported a 72.1% surge to 45 billion yuan (US$6.52 billion).

R&D spending climbed to 22% of revenue, and chairwoman Meng Wanzhou warned of uncertainty ahead.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Profit rose faster than sales, helped by overseas markets

  • Revenue growth slowed, yet Huawei’s net profit climbed 8.6% to 68 billion yuan, almost four times its revenue growth rate 1.
  • The numbers fit tighter costs plus more higher-margin products as Huawei moves past sanctions, restrictions largely led by the US that limit Huawei’s access to certain technologies and suppliers 1.
  • Overseas demand did the heavy lifting. Revenue in China edged up 0.2% 2.
  • Asia Pacific outside China jumped 15.7%. Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) revenue increased 8.8%, which broadened Huawei’s geographic mix 2.

Results add up to an expensive push for tech self-reliance

  • R&D reached 21.8% of total revenue, a steep price for building a technology stack independent of US components 3.
  • Cloud traction weakened. External cloud revenue fell 3.5% 4.
  • Domestic competition stayed tough. Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing division of Chinese tech giant Alibaba, grew revenue 36% 4.
  • The gap supports a broader takeaway for firms and nations. Greater resilience can demand near-unparalleled spending, while growth can still trail larger or less-constrained rivals 5.
