Huawei restructures cloud unit to focus on AI business

Huawei has begun restructuring its cloud computing unit to focus more on AI, according to sources and Chinese media.

The unit, which handles AI model development, cloud services, and data center solutions, merged several departments last week to prioritize AI-related business.

The number of affected employees is not clear, but some may be offered internal transfers. The restructuring was announced internally by Zhang Pingan, CEO of the cloud unit.

The unit’s operations will be reorganized into six areas, including computing, storage, database, and cybersecurity.

This move follows reported losses in the cloud business last year and aims to improve profitability.

Huawei did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Cloud profitability remains elusive even for tech giants with deep resources

Huawei’s cloud unit restructuring reveals how challenging it is to achieve profitability in cloud computing, even for companies with substantial backing.

The reorganization specifically aims to “achieve profitability following losses last year,” showing that despite Huawei’s historically strong financial position and heavy R&D investments of 10-15% of annual revenue, cloud operations remain financially challenging12.

This struggle reflects broader industry trends where cloud divisions require massive infrastructure investments and economies of scale before becoming profitable.

The decision to streamline operations into six core divisions—computing, storage, database, and cybersecurity—suggests Huawei is focusing on higher-margin services rather than competing purely on infrastructure scale1.

2️⃣ Geopolitical pressures drive strategic technology consolidation

The timing and structure of Huawei’s cloud restructuring illustrates how companies adapt their innovation focus when facing international restrictions.

By merging departments specifically to “prioritise AI-related business” amid the ongoing US-China tech tensions, Huawei is concentrating resources on technologies where it can maintain competitive advantages1.
