Huawei, Qualcomm sign multiyear patent licensing deal

Huawei and Qualcomm announced on October 5 a multiyear patent licensing agreement covering cross-licenses in fields including 5G, compute, AI, and networking.

The deal also includes Qualcomm’s planned purchase of certain Huawei US patents in compute, AI, networking, and other technologies. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals.

The companies said the agreement reflects their commitment to intellectual property rights and fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory licensing principles.

The relationship dates back at least to 2001, and the companies also disclosed a patent licensing agreement in July 2020.

The companies did not identify which approvals are required. In separate foreign-investment cases, US authorities blocked Broadcom’s attempted takeover of Qualcomm, while Huawei faced CFIUS pressure over its 3Leaf Systems investment.

Those cases do not establish which reviews apply to this agreement.
