Huawei pushes HarmonyOS Next for tech independence

Huawei launched HarmonyOS Next in December 2024 with its Mate 70 smartphone, marking a major step toward a third mobile operating system separate from iOS and Android.

Developed after US trade restrictions in 2019, HarmonyOS Next moves away from Android’s framework, reinforcing Huawei’s goal of technological independence.

Currently in public testing, it runs on several Huawei devices in China, while international models still use EMUI.

The OS supports popular Chinese apps for messaging, shopping, and streaming but lacks many global apps like Google Maps and Zoom.

Huawei aims to expand its app ecosystem from 15,000 to 100,000 apps to improve compatibility while also providing alternatives for Android-based applications.

Part of China’s broader push for self-reliance, Huawei plans to integrate HarmonyOS Next into wearables, automotive systems, and smart home devices.
