Huawei posts $127b revenue, retakes China smartphone crown

Huawei reported revenue of over 880 billion yuan (US$127 billion) in 2025, according to a company executive at the 2026 Guangdong High-quality Development Conference.

The company regained the top spot in the mainland Chinese smartphone market last year with a 16.4% share, narrowly ahead of Apple’s 16.2%, according to IDC.

Huawei’s proprietary HarmonyOS has been adopted across various sectors, with over 40 million devices running HarmonyOS 5 and 6, and more than 75,000 apps available.

The company is also investing in AI infrastructure, with at least 43 large AI models trained on its Ascend chips.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Huawei’s revenue revival relies on a tightly integrated ecosystem

  • Huawei’s climb back to No. 1 in the mainland Chinese smartphone market goes beyond hardware sales. It also enlarges the audience for its proprietary HarmonyOS.
  • HarmonyOS 5 and 6 now run on over 40 million devices. That scale draws developer attention, bringing in more than 75,000 apps and building a network effect that pushes back on Android inside China.
  • Ascend AI chips already helped train at least 43 large AI models. They also support cloud services plus on-device AI, which keeps more of the stack in-house and reduces exposure to foreign supply chain pressure.

Huawei’s success signals a splintering of the global tech landscape

  • Huawei edged past Apple to retake the top spot in the mainland Chinese smartphone market. The result suggests a China-focused ecosystem without Android can still compete at scale.
  • That outcome offers a possible path toward technological sovereignty. Other countries may try to cut dependence on the Android-iOS duopoly, which would further split the mobile software market.
  • Ascend is emerging as a workable option to Nvidia for training AI models in China. That shift speeds up AI decoupling and may leave global firms supporting two distinct tech stacks that may not work well together.
