Huawei launches new AI architecture to rival Nvidia

Huawei Technologies has introduced a new AI infrastructure architecture called the CloudMatrix 384 Supernode.

Launched last week, the system aims to improve computing power and address bottlenecks in AI data centers, according to STAR Market Daily.

The CloudMatrix 384 Supernode reportedly achieves 300 petaflops of computing power, exceeding Nvidia’s NVL72 system, which offers 180 petaflops, based on Huawei’s data cited in the report.

Nvidia’s NVL72, launched in March 2024, features a 72-graphics processing unit (GPU) NVLink domain.

This setup facilitates efficient data sharing and real-time inference for large language models.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Sanctions have accelerated Huawei’s technological self-sufficiency

Huawei’s CloudMatrix 384 represents a culmination of the company’s years-long strategy to become technologically self-reliant amid U.S. restrictions.

The company has systematically replaced 13,000 foreign components with domestic alternatives, strengthening its supply chain resilience against external disruptions 1.

This self-sufficiency drive has paid dividends financially. Huawei reported a 10% revenue increase to 704.2 billion yuan in 2023, with net profit more than doubling to 87 billion yuan 2.

The CloudMatrix system, powered by Huawei’s own Ascend 910C chips built on a 7nm process, demonstrates the company’s ability to develop sophisticated AI hardware despite being cut off from advanced western semiconductor technology 3.

While Huawei remains three generations behind competitors in chip manufacturing processes, the reported performance metrics of the CloudMatrix (300 petaflops versus Nvidia’s 180 petaflops) suggest the company has found ways to maximize efficiency within these constraints 4.

This development reflects a broader trend in China’s tech ecosystem, where external pressure has accelerated domestic innovation and alternative technology development.

2️⃣ The shifting global landscape of AI computing infrastructure

Huawei’s CloudMatrix 384 Supernode marks a significant milestone in the global competition for AI infrastructure leadership, traditionally dominated by U.S. companies.
