Huawei latest smartphone uses improved China-made chip: report

Huawei’s new Mate 80 smartphone uses the Kirin 9030 chip, which is produced by Chinese semiconductor firm SMIC with an upgraded 7-nanometer process, according to TechInsights.

TechInsights, a Canada-based research firm, said SMIC’s N+3 process is a refined version of its earlier 7-nanometer node, but remains less advanced than the 5-nanometer technologies used by TSMC and Samsung.

Huawei and SMIC, both based in China, have not commented on the development.

Chinese authorities added TechInsights to a list of “unreliable entities” in October, after the firm’s ongoing reports on Huawei and SMIC’s semiconductor progress.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

SMIC’s N+3 poses yield risks that could constrain Huawei’s Mate 80 volumes

  • SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation) built N+3 with higher density than N+2, yet it trails TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) and Samsung 5 nm nodes. It uses multi-patterning deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography, not extreme ultraviolet (EUV) 1.
  • Tighter metal pitch raises defect rates and lowers the share of chips that meet specifications. Usable dies per wafer can fall on DUV-heavy flows 1.
  • Reports list 12 CPU cores on Kirin 9030 (Mate 80) and 14 on Kirin 9030 Pro with controlled power use. Further gains depend on design-technology co-optimization (DTCO) and other design work, while advanced packaging (connecting multiple chips within one package) is a broader scaling lever yet fits mobile poorly 1.
  • Production scale depends more on N+3 yield and manufacturability than on peak performance 1.

AppGallery’s 580 million users show Huawei’s ecosystem scale

  • Huawei’s AppGallery, the company’s app store, reached over 580 million monthly active users by the fourth quarter of 2023. The lack of Google services on new Huawei phones lifted AppGallery adoption 2.
  • Huawei pushes cross-device app experiences, including AppGallery for Windows PCs, and curates categories for discovery 3. Developers can target phones, tablets, and other gear within the same ecosystem.
  • The timing for partners hinges on premium device volumes. Component suppliers and developers should track Mate 80 sell-through and 2025 device roadmap news before committing go-to-market resources (marketing and sales budgets).
