Huawei, Indonesian state power firm to develop AI plant solutions

PLN Indonesia Power and Huawei have signed a joint study agreement to develop AI-based digital solutions for power plant operations at the PLTU Banten 3 Lontar facility in Indonesia.

PLN Indonesia Power is a state-owned electricity generation company in Indonesia.

The collaboration will focus on using AI for intelligent inspections, strengthening health, safety, security, and environment (HSSE) systems, and supporting cybersecurity and IT integration at the power plant.

The study aims to assess technical, safety, business, legal, and environmental aspects before any pilot project rollout.

This initiative is part of PLN Indonesia Power’s efforts to support Indonesia’s national energy transition agenda and increase operational efficiency and safety at its power plants.

The trial will take place at the 4×315 MW PLTU Banten 3 Lontar facility.

No financial terms or project timelines were disclosed.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The study lacks proof that Huawei’s AI lifts performance at thermal power plants

  • The joint study at PLTU Banten 3 Lontar sets no budget or timeline and adds no binding commitment. Work covers reviews before a pilot in technical and safety plus business, legal, or environmental areas.
  • Huawei says its platform uses AI video analysis and can trim construction costs by up to 40% 1. These claims need published results from thermal plants.
  • Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau cut inspection time from 20 days to 2 hours with Huawei’s Atlas 200 AI module (an edge AI computing device) 2. That work covered transmission line checks, not plant operations at PLTU Banten 3 Lontar, a 4×315 MW thermal site.

Systems integrators and Operational Technology (OT) security vendors can pursue PLN Indonesia Power’s wider AI plans

  • The study marks a step by PLN Indonesia Power (a state-owned electricity generation company) toward AI at plants and creates near-term work for vendors outside the deal. Targets include inspection drones and OT cybersecurity. Training and change management fit, as does industrial wireless.
  • Huawei says the design supports Wi‑Fi 6 and 5G for wireless links 1. It also works with radio‑frequency identification (RFID) and ultra‑wideband (UWB). That could spark tenders for providers able to wire up whole sites at PLN locations.
  • Vendors and systems integrators can watch PLN Indonesia Power’s e-procurement portal for requests for proposals (RFPs) on AI inspections, HSSE, or cybersecurity. Time bids to match any pilot beyond PLTU Banten 3 Lontar and into the wider fleet.
