Huawei debuts HarmonyOS 7 beta with AI agents
Huawei Technologies, based in Shenzhen, released HarmonyOS 7 as a beta to developers on June 12 at its annual developer conference, adding AI agent features as it competes with Apple’s iOS 27.
Huawei said the upgraded assistant can understand context, remember past interactions, connect with more than 2,000 specialised AI agents, and handle tasks such as building marathon training plans from a user’s health and calendar data, or locating and sending files stored on a connected laptop.
The company also said its agent framework has a 90% success rate on complex tasks, and that the operating system is expected to debut on Huawei’s next flagship smartphone later this year.
Recent HarmonyOS versions have removed Android code and no longer support Android apps natively, marking a deeper break from Android.
Huawei has said HarmonyOS reached 1 billion active users in October 2024 and had a 19% share of China’s smartphone operating system market in the first quarter of 2025.
The launch came days after Apple unveiled iOS 27, while its latest AI features remain unavailable in mainland China because of regulatory restrictions.
Public-facing generative AI services in China face content, data, and compliance rules, and some providers must conduct security assessments and file their algorithms with regulators.
