Huawei launches new Kirin chips after $250b R&D investment
Huawei, the Shenzhen-based telecom and consumer electronics maker, launched the Mate 90 series on October 1, featuring new Kirin chips across the lineup.
Huawei said it invested 1.8 trillion yuan (US$250 billion) in R&D between 2007 and the end of 2025, which it said helped drive advances in its Kirin chips, HarmonyOS, and other technologies.
The Mate 90 series includes four models, with the Pro Max Premium Edition and RS Ultimate Design powered by the Kirin 9050 pro. The pro model uses the Kirin 9035, while the standard Mate 90 uses the Kirin 9030.
Huawei said the Kirin 9050 Pro delivers a 31% increase in overall performance, while the Kirin 9035 and Kirin 9030 offer performance gains of 20% and 27% respectively. The company did not disclose the process node used for the Kirin 9050 Pro.
The new chips are part of Huawei’s push to develop more of its core technology in-house as it faces continued pressure on access to advanced chips and manufacturing equipment. Huawei and China-based chipmaker SMIC have faced tighter export controls affecting the country’s semiconductor industry.
The Mate 90 series starts at 5,999 yuan (US$900) and goes up to 12,999 yuan (US$1,900) for the RS Ultimate Design. The lineup also supports eSIM and runs Huawei’s HarmonyOS 7, with AI features built into the operating system.
Huawei has been regaining ground in China’s smartphone market, where it competes with Apple and other major smartphone makers.
