Huawei-backed EV maker Seres nets $1.8b from Hong Kong IPO

Seres Group has raised HK$14.3 billion (US$1.8 billion) through its Hong Kong listing after pricing shares at HK$131.50 (US$16.92) each and expanding the deal size.

The Chongqing-based firm, which makes EVs and partners with Huawei, sold about 108.6 million shares, including 8.4 million additional shares that increased the offering by 8.4%.

The listing price is 22% lower than Seres’ closing price in Shanghai on October 31.

Seres’ Hong Kong shares will begin trading on November 5.

This is the eighth Hong Kong listing in 2025 to raise more than US$1 billion.

Seres was founded in 1986 and originally made springs and shock absorbers before moving into motorcycles and EVs.

China International Capital Corp. and China Galaxy Securities are joint sponsors for the listing.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

  • Seres priced Hong Kong-listed H-shares 22% below Shanghai close, with Stock Connect access and fungibility unclear. A-shares are Mainland-listed, yuan-denominated stock; H-shares are Hong Kong-listed stock in Mainland companies; Stock Connect links the two markets; fungible means one line can be converted into the other.
  • Seres’s A-shares entered Stock Connect in December 2024 via the SSE 180 index 1. H-shares do not auto-qualify for Southbound under Hong Kong Connect rules tied to index membership and market cap thresholds 2 (market cap means equity value). Southbound access 3 would invite Mainland buying plus arbitrage pressure, yet A-H prices diverge due to market independence and no direct arbitrage tools 2. Without fungibility, investors cannot convert between lines, so the discount may persist 2.
  • AITO is the EV brand co-developed by Seres and Huawei. Seres showcased eight AITO models at the Paris Auto Show 1.
  • Seres unveiled a next-generation super-range-extender system that yields over 3.6 kWh per liter, cuts fuel use by 15%, and reduces perceived noise by 90% 1. A range extender is an onboard engine-generator that charges the battery. kWh is a measure of stored energy. Third-party providers can time outreach by tracking capital allocation and target geographies after the Hong Kong fundraising. Focus on charging infrastructure; logistics plus warehousing; cross-border payments; OTA software updates. Component suppliers in the Seres-Huawei collaboration on the HUAWEI ADS 3.0 advanced driving system 1 could see orders, including ADAS sensors (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), in-vehicle computing, or cybersecurity for connected vehicles.
