Huawei AI chips contain TSMC, Samsung parts despite US curbs

Huawei’s latest Ascend AI chips include components from major Asian tech firms, according to a report by TechInsights.

The research firm found that Huawei’s third-generation Ascend 910C processors contain parts from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Samsung Electronics, and SK Hynix.

Huawei identified TSMC-made dies and high-bandwidth memory (HBM2E) from both Samsung and SK Hynix in separate samples of the chip.

The findings highlight China’s continued use of foreign hardware in its efforts to build up domestic AI semiconductor production.

Huawei has faced US export controls since 2019, with restrictions targeting advanced chips, memory, and manufacturing tools.
