HTX founder shifts trading unit to Bitfire

Li Lin, founder of crypto exchange Huobi, now HTX, plans to transfer a trading system and team from Avenir Group to Hong Kong-listed wealth manager Bitfire Group.

The move follows Bitfire’s April 22 agreement to acquire the assets for US$1.6 million.

The deal comes as Hong Kong pushes to become a virtual asset hub, while mainland China has banned crypto trading since 2021.

Bitfire Group CEO Livio Weng said the company plans to raise external capital for a bitcoin strategy.

The strategy will trade derivatives using bitcoin or BlackRock’s IBIT ETF as the underlying asset.

Avenir held 18.3 million shares in the IBIT fund worth US$908 million at the end of 2025, according to a regulatory filing.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This deal is a small piece of a broader move toward Asia’s crypto rich

  • The US$1.6 million asset transfer sits inside a broader plan to turn Bitfire, a unit of Hong Kong-listed Newfire Technology, into the “Goldman Sachs of the crypto industry” 1.
  • Run by former Huobi executives, the company is steering clear of another retail crypto-exchange because it sees that business as hard to distinguish 1.
  • Its bet is a private banking service for Asian high-net-worth individuals and family offices with more than HK$10 million (US$1.28 million) in assets 1.
  • That service covers crypto allocation, custody, plus inheritance planning, reaching past the basic trading common on mainstream platforms 1.

Regulatory change is shaping a new crypto path across Asia

  • Bitfire’s approach maps a path for crypto firms working across Asia’s uneven rules after mainland China banned crypto trading in 2021 1.
  • The company is pushing a “Digital Asset Treasury” (DAT) model that uses publicly listed companies to hold reserves such as Bitcoin and Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency 1.
  • Investors in regular stock markets can get crypto exposure through those shares, which CEO Weng Xiaoqi called “the lightest way for traditional investors to enter the crypto world” 1.
  • It plans a US$500 million DAT fund, offering another route besides exchange-traded funds while bringing crypto investment into familiar corporate structures 1.
