HTC to sell part of XR unit to Google for $250m

Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC announced on Jan. 23, 2025, that it plans to sell a portion of its extended reality (XR) division to Google for US$250 million.

As part of this deal, some HTC employees focused on XR research and development will transfer to Google.

The deal also allows Google a nonexclusive license to HTC’s XR intellectual property rights.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2025.
