Hong Kong’s Kuaishou eyes $2b Kling AI spin-off
Kuaishou Technology, a Hong Kong-listed Chinese short-video platform, saw its shares rise as much as 10% on May 12 after reports said the company plans to spin off its Kling AI video generation unit.
The Chinese short-video platform is reportedly seeking to raise US$2 billion at a US$20 billion valuation.
The May 11 report said Kuaishou is in talks with investors including Tencent.
It was also reported that Kling has reached an annualized revenue run rate of US$500 million.
Kuaishou is often seen as a domestic rival to ByteDance-owned Douyin in China.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Kling’s valuation rests on fast revenue growth
- Kling’s annualized revenue run rate reached US$500 million after months of faster growth.
- Launched in June 2024, the AI unit hit a US$100 million annualized revenue run rate by March 2025 1. It then climbed to US$240 million by December 2025 2.
- If accurate, the jump to US$500 million took about five months, which suggests it is turning usage into sales faster.
- Kling serves more than 60 million creators worldwide plus over 30,000 business customers. That commercial reach supports the US$20 billion valuation discussed in spin-off talks 2.
A Kling spin-off could unlock more AI value
- Spin-off talks suggest one route for large tech companies to put a clearer price on in-house AI businesses, especially when the parent company’s shares look undervalued 3.
- As a separate company, Kling could win a higher valuation as a fast-growing AI business instead of being folded into Kuaishou’s wider operations.
- That step could push other tech firms to separate successful AI units, which may create more specialized public companies and reshape how investors price corporate innovation.
