Honda taps US AI startup Helm.ai in self-driving software deal

Honda has signed a multi-year deal with US-based AI startup Helm.ai to develop self-driving technology for its vehicles.

Helm.ai, founded in 2016 in Redwood City, California, focuses on camera-based perception and simulation software for automated driving.

The companies plan to create advanced driver assistance systems for Honda’s mass-market vehicles by 2027.

Honda has invested in Helm.ai since 2021, contributing at least US$30 million in early-stage funding.

This move follows similar initiatives by automakers such as General Motors, Tesla, and BYD to advance automated driving features.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Honda’s methodical investment-first approach to autonomous driving partnerships

Honda’s deal with Helm.ai demonstrates a calculated strategy of testing technology partnerships through equity investments before committing to larger development agreements.

The company has been investing in Helm.ai since 2021, including at least $30 million in early-stage financing, before now expanding into this multi-year production development partnership targeting 2027 deployment 1.

This investment-then-partnership approach aligns with Honda’s broader corporate venturing strategy through Honda Xcelerator Ventures, which identifies and invests in startups across carbon neutrality, robotics, and manufacturing technologies 2.

The pattern allows Honda to evaluate both the technology’s potential and the startup’s execution capabilities over several years before making deeper commitments to integrate the technology into mass-market vehicles.

This methodical approach contrasts with some automakers that announce major partnerships without prior investment relationships, potentially reducing Honda’s risk in the capital-intensive autonomous driving sector.
