HK wealth fund backs local surgical robotics startup with $200m
Cornerstone Robotics, a surgical robotics startup based in Hong Kong, has secured commitments for US$200 million in a new funding round backed by Hong Kong Investment Corp (HKIC) and several major venture capital firms.
The startup develops robotic surgical systems designed to assist surgeons with minimally invasive procedures.
Cornerstone Robotics was founded in 2019 and operates out of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park, with over 200 engineers and a manufacturing facility in Shenzhen.
HKIC, the investment arm of the Hong Kong government, joined Qiming Venture Partners, Gaorong Ventures, and Bridgeone Capital in the latest round.
The company began clinical trials in Hong Kong in 2022 and has since expanded to hospitals in mainland China.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Cornerstone’s $200m raise 1 leaves gaps on commercialization readiness
- Cornerstone raised $200 million 1, yet commercialization facts remain murky. Hospitals with Sentire since the September 2024 National Medical Products Administration (NMPA, China’s medical device regulator) approval 2 are not tallied, and revenue-generating placements are unspecified.
- Trials covered urology, general surgery, gynecology plus thoracic procedures 2, yet sources omit patient counts or head-to-head outcomes while global brands still lead the laparoscopic segment 3.
- Public hospitals awarded 74 robotic units in H1 2025 3, with expansion into Tier 2 cities 3. Cornerstone’s share versus MicroPort MedBot and its Toumai system remains undisclosed 4. Toumai claims 1,500 surgeries across 60+ hospitals 4, which makes it hard to judge if the raise signals proven traction or a bet on potential.
Hospital buying surge creates integration and training needs for B2B vendors
- Public tenders awarded 74 units worth 700 million Renminbi in H1 2025 3, with more expected in H2 2025 as renewal cycles hit 3. This wave opens work for operating room infrastructure, networking, and cybersecurity suppliers around robotic installs.
- MicroPort MedBot runs 30 plus Toumai clinical application and training centers in China 4. Hospitals adding robots need surgeon training, which creates openings for medical education tech and simulation vendors. They can build certification and assessment platforms with manufacturers.
- Enterprise software and healthcare IT teams should track Cornerstone placements in Tier 2 cities 3. Timing helps pitch hospital information systems integration and data management when surgical robotics roll into less digitally mature facilities.
