HK police arrest 12 over $15m crypto laundering case

Hong Kong police have dismantled a money laundering syndicate involved in laundering HK$118 million (US$15 million) through banks and cryptocurrency exchanges.

The operation led to the arrest of 12 individuals, including two local ringleaders and ten mainland Chinese operatives aged 20 to 42.

According to the police’s commercial crime bureau, local members recruited mainland citizens to open shell accounts in traditional and digital banks in Hong Kong.

Superintendent Shirley Kwok Ching-yee stated that these operatives used the accounts and bank cards to withdraw cash.

This cash was then converted into cryptocurrency at virtual asset exchanges.

Around 500 fake accounts were created as part of the operation.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Hong Kong faces a fraud epidemic amid digital finance growth

Hong Kong’s money laundering bust reveals just one facet of a much larger financial crime problem plaguing the region.

The territory’s average fraud losses reached HK$33,500 (US$4,332) per victim in 2024, ranking third highest globally and nearly 2.5 times the worldwide average 1.

This specific money laundering case reflects broader trends, as Hong Kong recorded over 36,000 fraud cases with losses exceeding HK$7 billion in just the first ten months of 2024 2.

The suspected digital fraud rate in Hong Kong stands at 6.2%, significantly higher than the global average of 5.4%, pointing to systemic vulnerabilities in the financial system 3.

Law enforcement has responded aggressively, with police arresting over 9,200 suspects for scams and money laundering offenses in a recent 12-month period, yet the problem continues to grow 4.

The case’s method of using mainland Chinese citizens to open multiple accounts mirrors a pattern seen in organized financial crime, where front companies and straw owners help obscure illicit fund movements.
