HK gas utility Towngas taps Tencent to expand cloud, AI systems

Hong Kong gas utility Towngas signed a partnership with Tencent to expand cloud systems and AI use across its operations.

The deal builds on work that started in 2020 and includes a smart energy platform that supports more than 100 integrated energy projects plus a data platform used by over 70 city gas affiliates.

Towngas plan to move more core businesses to the cloud while developing digital platforms and AI tools.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This partnership builds on earlier work

  • Towngas and Tencent started working together in 2020 through Towngas Lifestyle, the utility’s consumer services business, and Tencent Cloud 1.
  • A year later, Towngas Energy, the company’s renewable energy arm, used Tencent Cloud to build a smart energy system for its projects 1.
  • That work led to the Towngas Analytics Platform (TAP), built with Tencent Big Data Suite (TBDS), Tencent Cloud’s big data tools. It now supports big data applications for more than 70 affiliated city-gas companies 1.
  • The latest agreement moves the tie-up to a group-wide partnership. The aim is to bring earlier efforts together and speed up AI work across the 164-year-old company 1.

Tencent is pushing deeper into essential industries

  • The agreement fits Tencent Cloud’s longer effort to place its technology inside essential industries, an effort already underway in 2017 2.
  • In that year, Tencent Cloud signed a cooperation agreement with Shenergy Group, a state-owned energy company in Shanghai, to build a big-data energy operating system that could predict gas and power use for resource allocation 2.
  • Working closely with a utility that serves more than 120 million customers gives Tencent access to large real-world operating settings. That can help sharpen its industrial AI and big data products 1.
  • The companies present the collaboration as a model for digital change in the energy sector, with a focus on better operations, stronger customer service, data security, and user privacy 1.
