High costs push firms toward cheaper AI, JP Morgan says

JP Morgan said enterprises are exploring cheaper open and open-weight AI models as the cost of frontier AI workloads rises.

Some users said AI-related bills rose by up to 100x after price changes, and the bank sees early signs of migration to lower-cost systems.

The shift reflects a broader trend of routing simpler, high-volume tasks to cheaper models while reserving premium systems for more complex work.

That has become more viable as open-weight models, whose downloadable parameters let companies host or fine-tune them internally, can be 10x to 30x cheaper than frontier application programming interface services for high-volume automation and offer more control over data.

JP Morgan said cost pressure is pushing businesses to reassess their reliance on premium models.
