Hewlett Packard closes acquisition of AI network firm Juniper
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has completed its acquisition of Juniper Networks, as announced on July 2, 2025.
The deal was initially disclosed in January 2024 and received approval from Juniper shareholders in April 2024.
The acquisition is intended to enhance HPE’s capabilities in the networking and AI sectors.
This will be achieved by incorporating Juniper’s AI-focused networking technologies.
This integration is projected to increase the scale of HPE’s networking business and broaden its offerings in hybrid cloud and networking solutions.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ HPE’s deliberate portfolio transformation reflects broader tech industry restructuring
HPE’s acquisition of Juniper Networks for $14 billion is the latest in a series of strategic moves that have fundamentally reshaped the company since its 2015 formation 1.
After divesting its Enterprise Services unit ($8.5 billion) to CSC in 2016 and selling non-core software businesses to Micro Focus, HPE has systematically acquired companies in high-growth areas, including Aruba Networks ($3 billion), Simplivity, Nimble Storage, and Cray ($1.3 billion) 2, 3, 4.
This pattern reflects the broader industry trend where technology companies are using M&A to reshape their portfolios rather than simply growing scale, with a particular focus on AI capabilities and high-margin segments 5, 6.
The acquisition doubles HPE’s networking business and accelerates its shift to higher-margin areas, positioning the company to capture growth in AI and hybrid cloud markets. HPE’s strategic evolution from a traditional hardware business to an integrated AI and cloud solutions provider demonstrates how legacy tech companies are reinventing themselves through careful portfolio management in response to rapid technological change.
2️⃣ The paradox of antitrust enforcement in the networking industry
The DOJ’s lawsuit to block HPE’s acquisition of Juniper Networks highlighted a significant disconnect between regulatory concerns and market realities in the networking sector 7, 8.
While regulators focused narrowly on potential wireless LAN market concentration, industry analysts pointed out that the combined entity would hold only about 20.4% of that market, far from a dominant position 7.
The lawsuit revealed a regulatory tension: the DOJ expressed concerns about reduced competition, while many analysts argued the merger would actually enhance competition against Cisco, the dominant player in networking 8.
