US healthcare startup Sprinter Health nets $55m series B

Sprinter Health, a healthcare startup based in California, has raised US$55 million in a series B funding round.

The round was led by General Catalyst, with contributions from Andreessen Horowitz, Google Ventures, Accel, and the Regents of the University of California.

This brings the total funding to US$125 million.

Founded in 2021 by Max Cohen and Cameron Behar, both former Google and Facebook employees, Sprinter Health offers at-home preventative healthcare services.

These services include blood draws, diabetes eye checks, and colorectal cancer screenings.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Home healthcare is becoming a massive market opportunity amid demographic shifts

Sprinter Health’s focus on at-home preventative services aligns with a major healthcare transformation, as McKinsey projects $265 billion worth of services could shift from facilities to homes by 20251.

This shift is further supported by demographic trends, with the U.S. aging population projected to account for 20% of the population by 2050, creating demand for 8.2 million new home care jobs by 20282.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly accelerated this transition, with patients increasingly preferring home-based care over facility visits, and approximately 48% of healthcare payors have already increased their at-home health options to meet this demand2.

The global home healthcare market reflects this momentum, with projections showing growth at a 7.96% CAGR to reach $666.9 billion by 2030, creating a substantial addressable market for companies like Sprinter Health2.

Sprinter’s rapid expansion from 5 to 18 states in just one year demonstrates how effectively positioned startups can capitalize on this fundamental healthcare delivery shift.

2️⃣ Operational logistics is the critical differentiator in home-based care success

The article mentions that “many home-based care companies have failed because it’s really hard to make the unit economics work,” highlighting why Sprinter’s logistics technology is their true competitive advantage3.

Successful home healthcare delivery requires solving complex operational challenges. Sprinter’s route optimization system that accounts for variables like traffic and parking directly addresses why Hospital at Home programs often struggle with resource management and efficiency3.
