HCLTech Q4 revenue misses estimates as clients cut spend

HCLTech reported revenue for the January–March quarter that fell short of expectations.

Clients cut back on technology spending amid geopolitical uncertainty.

Revenue rose 12.3% from a year earlier to 339.8 billion rupees (US$3.63 billion), below the 342.4 billion rupees (US$3.67 billion) analysts polled by LSEG expected.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Beneath the revenue miss, a steeper slowdown with an unexpected AI jump

  • The weak quarter went past the revenue shortfall. The company also forecast fiscal 2027 growth of 1% to 4%, below what many expected 1.
  • A nearer-term concern sits in new bookings, which help signal future sales. They dropped to US$1.94 billion from US$3 billion in the prior quarter 1.
  • One area moved the other way. Revenue from HCLTech’s advanced AI services rose fourfold in one quarter, climbing from US$146 million to US$620 million 1.

A sign that easy tech spending is fading

  • The results fit a broader pattern across Indian IT services. Wipro also came in below estimates, while Tata Consultancy Services posted a rare drop in annual revenue in dollar terms 1.
  • Company tech budgets are shifting. Large discretionary digital projects are giving way to work tied to cost control 1.
  • The pullback is clear in specific markets. HCLTech’s telecom business fell 8.6%, while its Europe business slipped 2.9% 1.
  • That backdrop is pushing IT vendors toward narrower work with clearer payoffs, including AI services. This helps explain the fast rise in that business 1.
