Hana Financial, Posco to build remittance blockchain

South Korea’s Hana Financial Group signed an MOU with trading firm Posco International and Seoul-based digital asset company Dunamu, to build a blockchain platform for cross-border remittances this year to speed up transfers and improve tracking.

Posco International will lead business use cases and test the system in its trade operations, while Hana will manage remittances and settlements.

Dunamu will provide the Giwa Chain infrastructure.

Posco International handles about 40,000 overseas remittances, and Hana and Dunamu had completed a proof of concept on Giwa Chain security and reliability before the deal.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The partners are already advancing digital finance

  • This alliance expands work that is already in use.
  • POSCO International already uses blockchain and became the first non-financial Korean company to issue digital bonds worth about 140 billion won (US$95.2 million) 1.
  • It also rolled out a blockchain-based global payment system with JPMorgan Kinexys, JPMorgan’s blockchain payments unit, in October 2025 for trade remittances 2.
  • The MOU also follows a proof of concept where Hana Financial Group worked with Dunamu on Giwa Chain in place of the SWIFT international bank messaging network, which could cut settlement times plus transaction costs 3.

This alliance could help build a broader digital financial ecosystem

  • The remittance system is the first use case on infrastructure Dunamu wants to make central to finance.
  • Dunamu describes Giwa Chain as a financial blockchain for stablecoin efforts. Hana Financial Group plans to build a remittance network with deposit tokens, a type of digital token backed by bank deposits, by the third quarter 45.
  • That network could grow if it ever links with a rumored Naver acquisition scenario, though Naver denied it. In that case, Naver Pay’s 30.68 million users could enter the Giwa ecosystem 6.
  • The move would shift Dunamu from a transaction-based crypto-exchange operator to an infrastructure provider for blockchain-based financial rails, the systems that move money digitally 6.
