Granite Asiaโ€™s private credit fund secures $250m

Granite Asia has secured over US$250 million in anchor commitments for its Libra Hybrid Capital Fund.

This fund focuses on private credit for mid-sized enterprises in the Asia-Pacific region.

The commitments include contributions from sovereign wealth funds in Asia, as well as the firmโ€™s general partners and network of founders and entrepreneurs.

The fund aims to provide secured loans to established businesses, particularly those undergoing digital transformation or seeking alternative financing.

It also offers private debt capital to support both organic and inorganic growth for companies in the region.

The Libra Hybrid Capital Fund is part of Granite Asiaโ€™s broader multi-asset strategy, which is managed by partners Ming Eng and Roger Zhang.

๐Ÿง  Food for thought

1๏ธโƒฃ Asiaโ€™s private credit market expansion creates strategic opportunity amid funding gap

Granite Asiaโ€™s successful fundraising reflects the dramatic growth trajectory of Asiaโ€™s private credit sector, which has expanded from $15.4 billion in 2014 to $92.9 billion by September 2023โ€”a staggering 500% increase over nine years 1.

This growth occurs within Asiaโ€™s massive $63 trillion credit market, where a substantial $2.2 trillion funding gap exists between traditional banking options and business financing needs, particularly for mid-market companies 1.

The timing of Granite Asiaโ€™s fund launch aligns with broader market shifts, as economic growth in regions like India (6.5% GDP growth) and Southeast Asia (4.7% GDP growth) is driving increased demand for flexible private credit solutions 2.

This expansion represents a structural shift in Asiaโ€™s financial landscape, with private credit providers stepping in where traditional banking institutions have become more constrained by regulatory requirements and risk management policies.

2๏ธโƒฃ Institutional investors pivoting toward Asia-focused private credit despite market headwinds

Granite Asiaโ€™s anchor commitments from sovereign wealth funds reflect a notable trend where institutional investors are strategically allocating capital to private credit despite the overall fundraising environment reaching a 10-year low in the region 3.

This selective approach is evident in the success of specialized funds, such as Ares Management raising over $3.3 billion for secured lending since 2015 and closing its Asia Direct Lending fund with A$2.6 billion in capital 4.
