Grab invests in WeRide to bring robotaxis to Southeast Asia

Grab has agreed to make a strategic equity investment in WeRide, a China-based autonomous driving technology company, as part of a broader partnership to introduce level 4 robotaxis and shuttles in Southeast Asia.

The investment is expected to close by the first half of 2026, pending closing conditions and WeRide’s preferred timing.

Both companies plan to integrate WeRide’s autonomous vehicle technology into Grab’s ride-hailing platform, aiming to deploy autonomous vehicles across the region.

The partnership includes technical collaboration on fleet management, vehicle dispatch, routing, and remote monitoring, as well as plans to train Grab driver-partners for new roles in the autonomous vehicle sector.

This agreement follows a memorandum signed in March 2025 to explore the feasibility and commercial potential of autonomous vehicles in Southeast Asia.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Partnership timing capitalizes on strong financial momentum from both companies

This strategic alliance comes as both WeRide and Grab are experiencing significant financial growth, positioning them well for major expansion investments.

WeRide reported explosive 836.7% year-over-year revenue growth in Q2 2025, with robotaxi revenue specifically reaching $6.4 million 1. Meanwhile, Grab posted strong Q2 2025 results with 23% revenue growth to $819 million and maintains a robust liquidity position of $7.6 billion 2.

The timing suggests both companies have the financial strength to execute their ambitious Southeast Asian deployment plans without compromising their core operations.

Grab’s monthly transacting users increased 15% to reach 46 million, demonstrating the scale of the customer base that WeRide’s autonomous vehicles could potentially serve 2.

2️⃣ Autonomous vehicles address real driver supply constraints across Southeast Asia

The partnership directly targets documented labor shortages that are constraining ride-hailing growth across the region.

Grab’s CEO specifically cited “manpower constraints” as an ongoing challenge, noting that autonomous vehicles can complement their driver network in cities with significant shortages.

This aligns with broader regional labor issues, as evidenced by Indonesian ride-hailing drivers staging protests in May 2025 to demand better pay conditions 3.
