Grab, A2Z pilot autonomous shuttle bus in Singapore

Grab, in partnership with South Korea-based A2Z, has begun a pilot program for an autonomous electric shuttle bus in Singapore.

The shuttle will start operations on July 9, 2025 connecting Grab’s one-north headquarters with the nearby one-north MRT station.

The shuttle features A2Z’s autonomous technology along with Grab’s Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

A trained safety driver will be onboard during operations to ensure passenger safety.

The shuttle equipped with 11 sensors, such as LiDAR, radar, and cameras, providing a comprehensive 360-degree view of its environment.

The pilot program also includes Grab’s private-hire and taxi drivers, along with members of the National Private Hire Vehicles Association, who will serve as part-time safety drivers after completing required training.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Singapore’s strategic autonomous vehicle roadmap guides private sector initiatives

Grab and A2Z’s shuttle pilot aligns with Singapore’s broader autonomous vehicle (AV) strategy that has been methodically developing since 2015.

The Land Transport Authority has been gradually expanding AV testing areas based on safety performance, recently adding over 1,000 km of public roads in western Singapore for more diverse testing scenarios 1.

This approach reflects Singapore’s preference for safety and public confidence over speed of deployment, with the government deliberately taking a “cautious approach” rather than rushing to be first in AV adoption 2.

The timing of Grab’s pilot is significant as it coincides with the government’s plan to introduce autonomous shuttles in Punggol by late 2025 3, showing how private enterprise initiatives are coordinating with national infrastructure planning.

Singapore’s autonomous car market is projected to grow from $799.4 million in 2025 to $2.17 billion by 2032, indicating substantial economic potential beyond this initial pilot 4.

2️⃣ First and last-mile connectivity remains the primary use case for autonomous vehicles

Grab’s office-to-MRT shuttle route exemplifies the most viable initial application for autonomous vehicles in Singapore, solving the “first and last mile” transportation challenge.
