Google’s Veo 3 generates vertical AI videos
Google has updated its Veo 3 AI video generator to support 1080p resolution and 9:16 vertical video formats.
The changes apply to both Veo 3 and Veo 3 Fast, which is a lower-cost, faster version that produces lower-quality videos.
Developers using the Veo 3 API can now generate vertical videos by setting the aspect ratio to 9:16, a format suited for mobile and social media platforms.
The 1080p output is currently only available for 16:9 aspect ratio videos, up from the previous 720p limit.
Google also reduced the cost to generate videos, with Veo 3 pricing now at US$0.40 per second and Veo 3 Fast at US$0.15 per second.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Vertical video format adoption reflects mobile-first content consumption patterns
- Google’s decision to add vertical video support to Veo 3 aligns with documented shifts in user behavior and engagement patterns on mobile devices.
- Vertical videos capture 13.8% more screen space on mobile devices and have higher completion rates compared to horizontal videos, making them more effective for audience retention 12.
- Social media platforms have seen engagement improvements with vertical content, with videos on Facebook generating more engagement than other post types 3.
- The timing of this update connects directly to Google’s earlier announcement about bringing Veo 3 support to YouTube Shorts, demonstrating how platform-specific optimization drives AI tool development decisions.
- This format preference matches how people naturally hold and use smartphones, creating a more immersive viewing experience that translates to measurable business outcomes for content creators.
AI video generation market shows rapid commoditization through competitive pricing
- Google’s significant price cuts, reducing Veo 3 costs from $0.75 to $0.40 per second and Veo 3 Fast from $0.40 to $0.15 per second, signal intensifying competition in the AI video generation space.
- These reductions of nearly 50% come as competitors offer alternative pricing models, with Runway Gen-3 Alpha starting at $12/month and OpenAI’s Sora included with ChatGPT Plus subscriptions at $20/month 4.
- The pricing pressure suggests AI video generation is transitioning from an experimental technology to a mainstream production tool, with companies competing on both features and affordability.
- Google’s emphasis on making the tools “stable and ready for scaled production use” indicates the technology has reached sufficient maturity for commercial deployment, moving beyond research and development phases.
