Google’s Opal introduces agentic workflows via text prompts

Google has introduced a new feature in its app Opal that enables users to create automated workflows using text prompts. The update includes an agent powered by the Gemini 3 Flash model, which can select tools and plan task steps independently.

The agent is designed to interact with users by requesting additional information or offering choices for next steps.

Launched in the United States in July 2025, Opal later expanded to 15 more countries, including Canada, India, and Singapore.

The tool allows users to build or remix web apps without coding, and Google added it to the Gemini web app in December for visual app creation.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Opal is Google’s ‘vibe coder’ for non-technical users

  • Opal now includes an agent feature that builds on its no-code setup, turning natural language into visual workflows for simple, content-focused apps 1.
  • Google aims it at a different group than its other AI tools. Professional developers get Antigravity, an “agent-first” coding environment, while enterprises can procure pre-vetted AI agents through the Google Cloud Marketplace 2.
  • Opal works well for lightweight jobs, yet it does not replace automation services like Zapier. It lacks complex branching logic and mostly connects inside Google’s ecosystem 3.

The rise of ‘shadow IT’ will force businesses to adapt

  • The new agent lowers the barrier for employees without coding skills to create AI tools, speeding up “shadow IT” where staff make solutions outside official corporate IT channels 3.
  • Companies face governance problems when staff produce mini-apps that touch sensitive customer data or internal records without IT oversight, which raises security risks 3.
  • Corporate IT teams may shift from writing all software to setting rules for employee-made tools. That work includes policies for access and data use, similar to controls used for third-party agents from a marketplace 2.
