Google is months behind schedule on Gemini 3.5 Pro as it works to improve the AI model’s coding performance, according to people familiar with the matter.

The delay has frustrated Google engineers, AI researchers, and managers, who worry the company is losing ground to Anthropic and OpenAI.

Late training updates disappointed employees, while internal coordination across products such as Search, Maps, and YouTube slowed releases.

Google said it is testing Gemini 3.5 Pro, an upgraded Flash model, and other models with partners, while discussing safety standards with the US government.

Users, including design platform Figma and Latin American education technology company Platzi, gave mixed feedback on Gemini 3.5 Flash.

Google’s public Gemini changelog shows Gemini 2.5 Pro became stable on June 26, 2025, and Gemini 3.5 Flash was released on May 19, 2026, as the model behind gemini-flash-latest.

This suggests 3.5 Flash anchors Google’s latest Flash tier, while the higher-end Pro release is still pending.

The White House’s June 2, 2026, order also outlined a voluntary framework for covered frontier models, including an option for developers to provide government access for up to 30 days before wider release.

The order said it does not create mandatory preclearance.
