Google.org backs $2m for AI support in Asia-Pacific nonprofits
Not-for-profit social enterprise, Infoxchange, has received US$2 million in funding to launch an AI capacity-building initiative across the Asia-Pacific region.
The program will assist not-for-profits in using AI to address challenges and enhance their operations.
It aims to support 10,000 staff and volunteers over two years by providing scalable AI tools.
The program addresses challenges identified in recent surveys, such as insufficient funding for AI tools and a lack of affordable, diverse local AI talent in the region.
Participating organizations will have access to self-paced learning materials, advisory services, and an online community group for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
This initiative is part of Google.org’s US$12 million AI Opportunity Fund: Asia-Pacific, which aims to assist various sectors in effectively utilizing AI technology.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ APAC nonprofits face a widening AI divide that mirrors global patterns
The Infoxchange initiative addresses a technological gap that’s particularly pronounced in the Asia-Pacific region, where 67% of nonprofits lack funding to deploy AI tools and 42% report critical shortages of affordable local AI talent1.
This disparity follows a consistent pattern in nonprofit technology adoption globally, where resource constraints have historically limited innovation, a challenge that extends beyond AI to broader digital transformation efforts2.
While developing economies in APAC show higher rates of generative AI adoption compared to developed economies, this is primarily driven by individual usage rather than organizational implementation3.
The contrast is stark when comparing nonprofit AI readiness with commercial enterprises in the region, where 46% of Singapore enterprises and 66% of South Korean businesses rate themselves as mature in AI adoption1.
Without intervention, this widening technology gap threatens to create a two-tier nonprofit sector where only well-resourced organizations can leverage AI’s efficiency benefits during a period when economic pressures are increasing demand for essential services.
2️⃣ Strategic data management remains the critical foundation for nonprofit AI success
While AI skills development is crucial, research shows that data infrastructure limitations represent an equally significant barrier, with over half of APAC enterprises lacking the necessary digital foundation for successful AI implementation1.
