Google, US broadband operator Radiate in talks for $1b GFiber JV

Google is in discussions with Radiate, a broadband operator backed by Stonepeak Partners, to form a joint venture that would hold their fiber assets, according to Bloomberg.

The proposed entity would include Google’s fiber internet service GFiber and Radiate’s operations.

Stonepeak is expected to own the majority stake, with Google holding a minority share. Stonepeak plans to invest around US$1 billion in preferred equity.

The move aligns with Google’s efforts to deconsolidate its fiber business, with plans to seek external investment to expand GFiber’s reach.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Pin down where the proposed joint venture (JV)’s fiber actually is and who it serves

  • Map GFiber’s reach in 13 cities across 15 states reaching about 4.1 million people, then compare with Radiate/Astound to size overlap and expansion 1.
  • Confirm whether the JV includes GFiber Webpass, a fixed‑wireless unit in 7 metros that targets apartments and businesses, which shifts the residential versus enterprise mix 1.
  • GFiber says about 90% of homes and businesses are 20‑Gig capable via 25‑gigabit Passive Optical Network (25G PON) builds, then check whether Radiate’s fiber can match that path 2.
  • Use FCC Broadband Map’s residential and business toggles with June 2025 data to estimate JV area revenue mix 3.
  • Set build timing from approvals. Wake Forest targets the second half of 2026 after North Carolina approvals, while Holly Springs launched in summer 2025 with construction completing in 2026 2.
  • People familiar say Stonepeak would hold majority control with roughly $1 billion in preferred equity, while Google would hold a minority stake. Talks continue, so terms could change.

Win the capital expenditures (capex) cycle: where vendors and operators can plug in

  • Prioritize GFiber’s 20‑Gig launch if you sell Passive Optical Network (PON) or Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), with ~90% of its network 20‑Gig ready via 25G PON and Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) rolling out 2.
  • Triangle work covers Wake Forest and Holly Springs, with Wake Forest slated for service in second half of 2026, while Holly Springs went live in summer 2025 with construction completing in 2026 2.
  • Place cross‑connects in metros where GFiber or GFiber Webpass operate, such as Chicago, Kansas City, Austin, San Diego, and San Francisco, for AI traffic 4.
  • Target lit‑service overlays using the Broadband Map’s business‑availability view if you are an enterprise ISP or MSP 3.
  • Bundle access control and automation with connectivity by tapping Webpass’s presence in 7 metros, then pair with GFiber’s Quext partnership, a property‑technology platform for smart apartments, to pitch smart‑community packages 12.
