Google updates AI Overviews, AI Mode to surface more links
Google announced updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews on October 15, including more prominent inline links in AI answers.
The company also plans to test dedicated sections for official websites, with context on why each source may be useful.
Google is also expanding news carousels in AI search features to more locations and languages, and adding image thumbnails to links at the end of some AI responses.
This week, the company began testing clickable creator and publisher names in AI Mode video results that link to Search profiles.
By May 2025, AI Overviews had expanded to more than 200 countries and territories. AI Mode has also expanded to more languages and locations.
The announcement follows a Pew Research Center finding that Google users were less likely to click links when AI summaries appeared in search results.
It also follows an European Union antitrust complaint filed by independent publishers against AI Overviews in July 2025.
