Google unveils Gemini AI for multi-step Android tasks

On May 12, Google unveiled new Gemini AI features for Android at its Android Show I/O Edition, including tools that can carry out multistep tasks across apps using what is on the screen as context.

The update lets users ask Gemini to move a grocery list from Notes to a shopping app, browse the web, fill forms, and complete purchases after a final confirmation.

Google said Gemini in Chrome will reach Android in late June, while Gboard will add AI dictation that transcribes speech and removes filler words, and users will also be able to create Android widgets with text prompts.

The features will first roll out to the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices this summer, with wider Android availability later in 2026.

Google’s on-device AI uses two ways to control apps

Google offers developers the “AppFunctions” library, a software toolkit that lets Android apps share data and features with AI agents and assistants such as Gemini 1.
If an Android app does not use that library, Gemini can still handle tasks through a separate system that works through the app interface, mimicking taps or scrolls with no developer effort 1.
